Keep the index on
In PortLine's settings, leave Index phones for Spotlight search on. The Phones page shows how many files of each phone are indexed.

Search
Press ⌘ Space and type part of a file name. Results on the phone open from the phone; PortLine fetches the file when you open it.
Folders you never opened
Files are indexed in the background, including folders you never visited in Finder. In our tests, files made on the phone in unopened folders were found by Spotlight within about 45 seconds.
Questions
Does indexing send my file names anywhere?
No. The index lives on your Mac, like the rest of Spotlight.
