How to copy files from a Mac to an Android phone

With the phone in Finder, copying to it works the way copying to a USB drive does: drag files into one of its folders.

Steps

  1. 1

    Open the phone in Finder

Connect it and click Open in Finder in PortLine. Copying to the phone needs Premium.

  2. 2

    Pick the right folder

Music players look in Music, video players in Movies, and most apps find documents in Documents or Download. Ringtones go in Ringtones.

  3. 3

    Drag the files in

Drop files or whole folders. PortLine sends several files at once and shows the progress in Finder and on its Activity page.

Never a half-written file

Each file uploads under a temporary name and gets its real name only once every byte is on the phone, so an app on the phone never opens an incomplete file.

Names Android won't accept

Android refuses : ? * | \ " < and > in file names in shared storage. PortLine writes the full-width look-alike instead (a:b.txt becomes a:b.txt) so the copy succeeds, and Finder shows the name the phone has.

Apps on the phone see new files

PortLine asks Android to index what it copies, so new photos and music appear in the phone's Gallery and music apps without a restart.

Questions

Can I copy a whole folder?

Yes, with everything inside it. Folders keep their structure on the phone.
