Steps

Connect and allow access
Plug the phone into the Mac and unlock it. If it asks to allow access to phone data, tap Allow.

Choose Transferring files
In the USB notification, choose Transferring files / Android Auto for Standard USB.

Optional: USB debugging
For Advanced USB, tap Settings › About phone › Software information › Build number seven times, then turn on USB debugging in Developer options at the bottom of Settings.

Open in Finder
Click Open in Finder in PortLine. Camera photos and videos are in DCIM › Camera.
What about Smart Switch?
Samsung Smart Switch for Mac makes whole-phone backups and moves data to a new Galaxy. For everyday copying of individual photos, videos and files, Finder with PortLine is quicker.
Questions
My Galaxy shows only Charging.
Unlock the phone, pull down the notification shade and tap the USB notification to change it to Transferring files.
